Author Hunter S. Thompson Commits Suicide

ASPEN, Colo. - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counter-culture author of books such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

The rest.

Thompson is 100% of the reason why I write, and why I write politics.

No. No no no.

God dammit, no.

Some Hunter quotes I'd pulled together for my next book.

I can't believe this.

We first feel shock and disbelief.  We try to cope by denying what happened.  The pain is so great that we must protect ourselves this way..Usually next comes anger, followed by a gradual realization of the consequences.  Depression often follows as we realize that nothing we do can change what has already happened.  And at the last comes acceptance.  There is no reason to expect that these stages won't move around, switch places and repeat.  And there's no real timetable, either.  Some people recover quickly, and others take months, or years, with the sad anniversary often overseeing a relapse into grief.

I'm very sorry to hear about this too...especially now that I know how important Thompson was to you.

Hang in there, Will!  We need you!

I wish I could lessen the grief you are feeling.  But all I can do is write these words and hope that somehow they might help.  Suicide is always such a terrible shock, coming out of left field like this.  Perhaps he felt there was no other way to turn, to go.  So his troubles and pain are over; may he rest in peace.  Now it's our turn to suffer the loss.  I hope that these words and those of everyone writing you will show you that you're not alone in your grief.  We all feel stunned and upset.
Please take care.  You are such an important person; your writing has such clarity to it.  We need you to endure this loss, and help us deal with it ourselves. We stand with you so that we might all support each other in our grief.

Well, I guess if I had to hear it somewhere I'm glad it was here.

Man, how horrible. I can't believe it.

The NY Times has created a page linking all their past reviews of Thompson's books here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/21/books/THOMPSON-REF.html

The last link on this page is to an interview the Times conducted with Thompson when he was covering the 1992 presidential campaign.

It's a nice tribute...putting all this info in one place.  I hope it helps...

I have Dr. Thompson to thank for making a change in my life.  I can't tell you that it was exactly positve in all senses, but I learned much about myself and my place in society from him.

No WAY do I think this was a suicide! (and that wasn't his suicide note, either, was it?) A friend of mine who just saw him talk in Austin says he was obviously happy, and I saw him in a video speaking in Ca. just a couple of weeks ago- energized by the crowd, on top of his form, and WHY would he kill himself at this point in his life?  And WHY does he live in a "Fortified Compound"?  and wouldn't he have written one HELLUVA suicide note, being who he is, and not just that last discourse about "shotgun golf" with Bill Murray?  I just got finnished reading about all the other suspicious "suicides" of journalists who were famous for speaking very damaging truth to Power, ESPECIALLY where it concerns the Bush Machine:

I'm in total agreement with you.  Remember Iris Chang and what she was investigating/researching for a new book at the time of her "suicide" in November 2004?  See Monica Eng's article, Flameout, Chicago Tribune oline edition, dated February 6, 2005.

Trying not to afraid...
