CamouflageBy Leslie Thatcher Fri Jun 30th, 2006 at 01:08:58 PM EDT :: French News Libération suggests that the Israeli Operation "Summer Rain," instigated to obtain the release of abducted IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit, as well as the construction of the "Wall" and the whole policy of unilateral disengagement, is just so much "camouflage" to cover up the absence of any substantive peace plan or prospect. A related article in the same paper points out the ineffectiveness of kidnapping Israeli soldiers, a tactic which has never succeeded in achieving the kidnappers' stated goals. A strong inference is that their stated goals either camouflage other, "real" goals or that the kidnappings themselves camouflage a fundamental impotence. Meanwhile, in Central Asia, the general directing NATO's army in Afghanistan echoes the bipartisan experts' poll finding that the war in Iraq is a distraction from the war on terror, while some claim that the war on terror itself is a smoke screen to hide an economic and/or raw power takeover by a group distressed with the results of the Watergate investigations. Yet this power, which has been remarkably effective at buying elections and selling influence, reducing civil liberties while increasing economic and social inequalities in the US, has proven as impotent as Israel, Hamas, Hamid Karzai or Pervez Musharaff at making the world more hospitable for its own or any other of the world's citizens, a failure that can only be camouflaged so long and that will sooner or later come to haunt those who have imagined themselves immune.
