Ohio Prisons

I probably would never have known what I know now, about my state of Ohio, located in "The Land Of the Free" America. It is a terrible thing that has happened to my son. Fourteen years ago a man much older, much bigger than my college junior son came into his home under false pretences, and tried to rape and kill him. During the battle for life, my son killed this man. To our horror we found out Ohio does not have a true self defense law. If there is a body, then the Prosecutors view point is someone is going to jail. My son is what they call in Ohio under the old law. I am amazed that the papers and people are not screaming about the fact Ohio has two types of sentences. New law as of 1996-sentenced-do the time-no parole board-get out-no matter what your actions are in the prison system. Old law- you go before the Parole board and are then resentenced by them to much loger sentences for the same crimes than the new law. You see Ohio is a prison for profit state we are at 300% capacity. We have 45 prisons. It is job security to send prisoners back and not give them parole,no matter the actions in the system, and let the repeat offenders out on parole (they will be back under your control again and inforce the fear in the public as to how much they need a parole board). When you talk about the slaves you are now talking about the prisoners in America. For $17 a month you can take apart computers (cancer causing materials are prevelent) to sell for the system and get paid $17 a month. Do the math $17 a month by 4 forty hour weeks a month/SLAVERY. It amazes me that we are always pointing a finger at other countries, yet we are practicing the same theng here. We have more citizens in prison than any other similar world country. Does this mean that Americans are more evil, more violent, than any other economic simialr country in the world. I think not. Why isn't the ACLU screaming about all the law suits in Ohio against the DRC and Parole Board-they are being found quilty of non onconformance to the laws and the inhumane treatment, exploitation of human beings all for a prisons for profit. We as Americans need to clean up our country before we point our money, and finger at others. WE have a very long way to go. In Ohio we even have the notarity of a Governer twice convicted of crimes in office and he is still there. What nationally is being done about our illegal operations in the prison systems (I m sure there are similar set ups in other states I just happen to know about Ohio). We are a faimly under attack by our own government/our own state/a state that is using our tax dollars to fight in the courts a illegal operation by it's own system -loosing in the court system-Ankrom vs DRC,Lane vs DRC,Sirak vs DRC...) however still flaunts its tyrantry at the parole board level. The parole booard believes it is above the law as they have shown time and time again. By the way our son went before the board after 10 years and had done many awarded things to use his time wisely helping others-learn to read,do math, participating in many helpful things to the community he is in- with the scoring being all 0's except for the orginal crime and he was what they call flopped for 10 more years (that means they sentenced him to 10 more years before they will even see him again). I see my country that we all love going into disgrace before God and I am saddened.

that Americans are being sardined in prison houses for undetermined amounts of time w/o chance of parole.  The Old and New System methodology is the result of the US Sentencing Guidelines and the Feds discontinuance of parole.  States simply mirrored the Feds and enacted the same.  It's called the Prison Industrial Complex.  Many state prison systems are now privatized.  Request through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to see how many of the state prisons are privately owned.

I've been screaming for months that this is pure SLAVERY.  But as you'll see even on this site there is little to no concern about the growing prison population in the country.  As you know the majority of prisoners are African-American males with Hispanics following.  I take it this is the reason there's so little concern about it.  This is nothing less that genocide and it's time to make the global community aware of what is taking place in this country.  It's time for the UN to get involved.  Mothers, wives, sister, brothers and children of all hues should unite on this front and demand that America LET OUR PEOPLE GO!

You should fight for your son's life.  Maybe things will change now that the 2 border patrol officers are going to prison, hopefully for life.

Serial Murderers? Rapists? Pedophiles?

in prison who are not "Serial Murderers?[!] Rapists?[!] Pedophiles?[!]" for god's sake. (And have you ever asked yourself WHY a society would lock up someone for say, nonviolent theft, or smoking a joint, and leave SO many of the criminals that you mentioned out on our streets -- uh, the really dangerous ones?  Duh.  Done an internet search for how many paedophiles are in your neighborhood??)  "Perhaps the single greatest force behind the growth of the prison population has been the national `war on drugs.' The number of incarcerated drug offenders has increased twelvefold since 1980. In 2000, 22 percent of those in federal and state prisons were convicted on drug charges."  http://backspace.com/notes/2003/04/30/x.html

There are a lot of POOR people, who have committed victimless crimes, who are locked up.  "Conservatives got tough on crime and inaugurated the biggest prison building scheme in world history. Driven by slogans like 'three-strikes-you're-out' and 'truth-in-sentencing,' U.S. prison populations have quadrupled since 1980. More than two million Americans wake up behind bars every morning, and one in 15 Americans will spend at least a year in prison during their lifetime. The land of the free and the home of the brave has been opening, on average, three new prisons or jails every month for the past quarter century."  http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2006/07/25/gop_protection_racket.php

A disproportionate number of them are people of color ... U. S. Department of Justice statistics from two years ago:  "At yearend 2004 there were 3,218 black male sentenced prison inmates per 100,000 black males in the United States, compared to 1,220 Hispanic male inmates per 100,000 Hispanic males and 463 white male inmates per 100,000 white males." and "Even more troubling than the absolute number of persons in jail or prison is the extent to which those men and women are African-American. Although blacks account for only 12 percent of the U.S. population, 44 percent of all prisoners in the United States are black.

"Census data for 2000, which included a count of the number and race of all individuals incarcerated in the United States, reveals the dramatic racial disproportion of the incarcerated population in each state: the proportion of blacks in prison populations exceeds the proportion among state residents in every single state. In twenty states, the percent of blacks incarcerated is at least five times greater than their share of resident population."   http://backspace.com/notes/images/us042903.pdf

Now, what was your point??

of America in its history.  There are no kingpins in prison.  Those who are convicted under the so-called war on drugs are petty street peddlers and users.  The prisons are your substance abuse programs and mental institutions.  The majority of "victims" housed in prisons are nonviolent first time offenders got caught up in the bogus conspiracy trap.

The conditions, overcrowding, no rehabilitative programs, slave labor, rape, abuse, the cost to taxpayers, and prosecutorial zealousness are issues that are long overdue in the public debate.

I suggest you get involved with the following organizations who deal specifically with sentencing reform.  Fight for your son's life, it's worth saving.  Make noise and lots of it.

good information, clear charts.  Earlier, I read that there are many people incarcerated that have severe mental-health problems, as well ... "Over 1 in 3 State prisoners, 1 in 4 Federal prisoners, and 1 in 6 jail inmates who had a mental health problem had received treatment since admission."  DOJ statistics, so it's probably worse than that.  But the "oh so wonderful" rethugs and simply the greedy mentality of corp. amer. of the 2000s have shut down mental facility after mental facility.  However, we have Neo and other little neos telling us that all is well, we are cared for, and that better days are here to stay.  I'm reading a lot of "I'm so disgusted" on TO these days -- I agree.  I'm SO disgusted.

America is no different that Darfur.  There should be a global call for sanctions.  Cut off her imports until judicial and prison reforms are implemented.  Who in the hell does America think she is running around the world talking about some damn bogus democracy while she has millions trapped in her filth infested prisons.

So much for free speech at the Free Republic. I just tried to post onto Free Republic website, I'm sure you're all aware of that one. It took them all of 2 minutes to boot me out. I got two posts on there before they revoked my posting privileges. All I said was that with Ney pleading guilty that it wouldn't be long before the rest of congress goes down too. After all they're all there for their own gratification istead of serving the people. I mentioned that they should start voting with their conciences instead of what O'Reilly rants at them.
I got a couple of boo hoo you lose type of comments, really showing their maturity.

Any way, Noe's behaviour is typical of the repugs. Deny everything until they're forced to come clean. Only when faced with a decision like carry on pretending they're innocent and face 20 years in jail or come clean and get a reduced sentence. Either way, this is what is going to take to change the attitude in Washington. We need the justice dept to investigate and prosecute thoroughly every single one of them that has taken dirty money and show them that the people will not stand for the corruption and deceipt no longer.

be a whole lots of political punkin goin on.  As soon as they hit prison, their boodie holes are going to get a big fat black plug.  They'll be switching around with bent wrist in a few days.  These are the same devils that wrote the laws that put and are holding so many of our people in prison and now the hunter is being captured by his own damn game.  Yep, Ney is going to make a mighty fine boodie boy.

Ney, Cunningham, and hopefully soon Delay, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Condi will have their initiation.

Sorry your brother is down.

now they're turning on one another like the craps they are.  No one respects a snitch.  It won't settle well with the inmates that Ney snitched, that alone is enough to get him strung up.
